Standards have indeed tightened. However, in most cases, all you have to
prove is that you can afford the monthly payment and a that you have a
good credit score. You don't necessarily need to have a 20 percent down
payment of the purchase price if you don't have it—there is still
traditional banks that will allow as little as a 5 percent down payment.
Documentation of assets have gotten a bit stricter, but overall there is
still plenty of financing available for qualified buyers.
