    Edmonton Refinery - Plant 13

    Delayed Coking Unit

The function of the delayed coking unit is to process the vacuum tower bottoms produced in the vacuum distillation unit (Plant 7).  The two main parts of the delayed coking unit are the coking drums and the product fractionation.

In the coking drums, large hydrocarbon molecules become unstable at high temperatures, above 900 °F, producing a hydrocarbon product (gasoline, distillate, and gas oil) and leaving solid carbon or coke behind.  Once deposited, the coke is then cut into small chunks by high pressure water jets and flushed out of the vessel into waiting railway cars.

Since there are essentially two stages in coker operation, coking and drilling, two drums are utilized. One drum is always undergoing coke deposition and the other drum is in the process of being prepared for drilling, undergoing drilling, or preparing for coke deposition.  The maximum coke production rate is 435 tons per day.

The hydrocarbon product from the online coking drum is routed to a fractionator where it is separated into coker gasoline which is routed to the atmospheric crude fractionation unit (Plant 1), coker distillate which is routed to the light cycle oil hydrotreater (Plant 10), and the coker gas oil which is routed to the fluid catalytic cracking unit (Plant 8).
