    Edmonton Refinery - Plant 14

Amine Treating Unit (fuel gas plant)

The function of the amine treating unit is two-fold.  The first function is to process the H2S rich (sour) off gases produced by many plants throughout the refinery into a low H2S content gas of less than 50 wtppm suitable for use as fuel gas throughout the refinery.  The final refinery fuel gas is mixture of the treated off gases and natural gas make up.  A solution called lean amine is used to physically absorb the H2S from the offgases; the H2S bearing liquid is then called rich amine.

The second function of the amine treating unit is to produce a gas stream containing mostly H2S from the rich amine stream created in the first process function and from other sources in the refinery.  The lean amine solution used in the refinery is a mixture of approximately 20% diethanolamine (DEA) and 80% water.

The main sources of sour off gas in the refinery are the bulk desulphurization unit (Plant 2), the saturated gas plant (Plant 4), the unsaturated gas plant (Plant 9), the light cycle oil hydrotreater (Plant 10), and the hydrocracking unit and syncrude gas plant (Plant 52).  Each of these process units contains product streams which are a result of catalytic processes which convert organic sulphur containing hydrocarbons into H2S.

The sources of rich amine stream are the bulk desulphurization unit (Plant 2)saturated gas plant (Plant 4), the unsaturated gas plant (Plant 9), the light cycle oil hydrotreater (Plant 10), the alkylation unit (Plant 12), and the syncrude gas plant (Plant 52).
