    Sulphur Plant

Click for larger imageThe function of the sulphur plant is to convert H2S rich gas (acid gas) produced by the amine treating unit (Plant 14) into elemental sulphur and a waste gas which is incinerated.

The process which is used to convert the H2S into elemental sulphur is called the modified Clause sulphur recovery process.  This process uses high temperature thermal reactions to generate some of the sulphur and to destroy the contaminants in the feed gas; essentially, this step is the partial oxidation of the H2S with air in a reaction furnace.  The oxidation step is then followed by catalytic reactions which complete the conversion of H2S and SO2 to elemental sulphur.

Click for larger pictureIn the process flow, a condenser follows each of the two catalytic beds in order to cool the process gas, and thus condense the elemental sulphur from the process gas.  After the first cooler, an exchanger is used to reheat the process gas for the second reactor.  After the second condenser the process gas is then routed to an incinerator where all of the remaining components are combusted, the remaining H2S is finally emitted to the atmosphere as SO2.

The main process parameters are the stoichiometric balance between H2S and SO2 in the partial oxidation step, air blower capacity (for the oxidation step), and mass flow through the unit.
